Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis (JRA) can be devastating to a young family. Kate, now 9 years old, is back to her spunky, lively self. She was first diagnosed with JRA at two years old, when her parents noticed her joints were puffy and inflamed. She had trouble doing simple tasks, like walking up stairs or holding hands with her parents. She was treated at Duke Children’s Hospital with a rigorous treatment regimen that reduced inflammation and reduced her risk of developing deformities. She has come quite a long way from when she was first diagnosed, as she has now started her own online business “Girls Rule.” “Girls Rule” showcases Kate’s artwork on t-shirts and other items, which helps raise money for other girls facing illness or other hardships. Kate’s story of recovery, and the physicians’ incredible knowledge and expertise, is just one example of why we support Duke Children’s Hospital.
We decided to take an active role in supporting the hospital this year by serving as builder for the 2014 Duke Miracle Home Charity Project. We hope you will consider making a donation in order to help us complete the Miracle Home and raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for the hospital.
Patient services at Duke Children’s Hospital & Health Center range from blood and marrow transplants, to orthopedic surgery. Unique stories like Kate’s showcase the important role that the hospital plays in sick patients’ lives all around the country. Without the support and generosity of donors, the hospital would not have the renowned reputation they have today. The physicians’ and surgeons’ obvious compassion and care for every patient and their family inspire us to support Duke Children’s Hospital in any way we can.
